줄거리

극작가 함세덕의 희곡 ‘동승’을 각색한 작품. 일본 동보영화사에서 활동한 윤용규 감독, 한형모 촬영기사가 작업한 “해방 후 조선영화 최고봉의 신기록을 지은 수작”이다. 도성(유민)은 산사의 주지 스님(변기종)과 생활하며 불도를 배우는 동승이다. 도성은 산사에 불공을 드리러 오는 젊은 미망인(최은희)에게 모정을 느끼게 되고 아들이 없는 미망인은 동승을 아들로 삼아 키우려 주지스님에게 간청한다. 동승의 친어머니(김선영)가 나타나 갈등이 생기지만 아이의 장래를 위해 친어머니는 산사를 떠난다. A child monk, Do-sung (Yu-min) learns the teachings of the Buddha while he lives with the temple`s head monk (Byun Gi-jong). Do-sung receives motherly love from a young widow, Eun-hui, who frequently visits the temple. Childless Eun-hui begs the head monk to let her adopt Do-sung. Then his biological mother (Kim Sun-young) appears causing some conflict, but for the future of her son, she just leaves the temple. On the day the widow leaves the mountain with Do-sung, it is found out that he had killed a bird with a trap. The head monk decides not to send Do-sung out in the world. Do-sung later finds out that his biological mother had been to the temple and he leaves to find her.
