줄거리

대학교수 부인 오선영(김정림)은 양품점에서 일을 시작한 뒤 최윤주(노경희)를 만나 댄스파티에 가게 된다. 그리고 옆집 청년 신춘호(이민)에게 흥미를 느껴 그에게 춤을 배운다. 한편 장교수(박암)는 제자인 타이피스트(양미희)에게 끌리지만 가정을 지키기 위해 부인이 돌아올 날을 기다린다. 오선영은 잘못을 뉘우치고 가정으로 돌아온다. 정비석의 문제작 <자유부인>을 한형모 감독이 영화화 했다. 수도극장 개봉 당시 10만 8천명을 동원, 1956년 흥행 1위를 차지했다. 1950년대 보수적인 한국사회 분위기 속에서 이례적이고 적극적으로 여성의 성적 욕망을 표현한 작품으로 2007년 9월 문화재청에 의해 문화재로 등재됐다.

A professor's wife, Seon-yeong (Kim Jeung-rim), starts working at a boutique shop. She meets Yun-ju (No Gyung-hui) and goes to a dance party. She learns how to dance from the next-door neighbor. Meanwhile, her husband Jang (Park Am) is attracted to his student (Yang Mi-hui), who works as a typist. But he does not want to ruin his family while waiting for his wife to return home. In the end, Seon-yeong realizes her mistake and comes back home with regret. Based on the controversial novel written by Jeon Bi-seok, the film was a hit at the box-office. This film follows an exceptional trend in dating that existed as part of the custom at the time; and, by doing so, it illustrates free love, women’s extramarital affairs, and Korea’s landscape where America’s modern lifestyle is blindly pursued. The film was registered as cultural asset by the Cultural Heritage Administration in 2007
