싱가포르 공식 역사는 1819년 영국의 식민지로 시작되지만, 13~14세기에 이미 ‘사자의 도시’라는 뜻의 싱가푸라라는 국가를 세운 상 닐라 우타마 왕이 있었다. 픽션과 다큐멘터리를 혼합한 이 작품은, 철학적 성찰과 정치적 알레고리, 신화적 환영을 오가며 역사와 신화, 근원과 권력에 대한 사유를 자아내는 에세이 영화인 동시에 시대극이다.
Official accounts of Singapore’s history record that the island state was founded in 1819 by Sir Thomas Stamford Raffles, as part of the British colonial empire. Little is known, however, about the other pre-colonial founder, known as Sang Nila Utama or the first ‘king’ of the Malays, who coined the name Singapura (or Lion City) between the 13th and 14th century when he encountered a lion along its shores. A genre-blending mixture of fiction and documentary, filmic tableaus, philosophical meditation and political allegory, mythical fantasy, costume parade dramatic enactments and film essay, this film sets into motion an inquiry into a subterranean network of issues related to myths, history, origins and power.

<보헤미안 랩소디 프로젝트>는 록 그룹 ‘퀸’(Queen)의 동명의 노래를, 피고와 판사 등이 법원에서 공연하는 형식으로 ‘번안’한 것이다. 미디어의 특성, 영화 제작 자체에 대한 탐구 기록이기도 한 이 작품에는 액자구조, 연극성, 팝컬처 등 다양한 특성이 녹아 있다. 지금은 미술관으로 쓰이는 옛 싱가포르 대법원에서 촬영되었다.
The Bohemian Rhapsody Project is a film set in the Supreme Court of Singapore that takes its spoken dialogue entirely from the lyrics of the song. This film-within-a-film aspect and the theatricality of the piece, along with the adoption of a pop-culture framework, alludes to the theatrical nature of the courtroom as it is presented in the media and popular culture.

정체를 확실히 알 수 없는 재난의 흔적이 가득하다. 의식과 무의식을 오가는, 삶과 죽음 사이에 있는 인간들이 쓰레기 더미처럼 얽혀 있다. 한 사람 한 사람을 비추는 카메라는 주먹을 움켜쥐는 사람, 눈꺼풀을 때리는 사람, 이웃을 위해 눈물을 흘리는 사람 등 기괴한 이미지를 차례로 보여준다. 끊임없이 들려오는 소리가 화면 위로 귀신처럼 떠다닌다. 그들 모두가 이루는 풍경이 롱 쇼트로 잡힐 때 비로소 그들의 실체가 드러난다.
We see the site of an unknown disaster, the debris of history that constitutes the story of Earth. Upon the site lie fifty humans oscillating between consciousness and unconsciousness, life and death. Each of them emerges into the foreground clutching a fist, batting an eyelid, or weeping for his neighbor. These figures recede from the light, losing their individual shapes to form a gigantic organism, breathing in unison, though their journey across Earth.
