해방이 왔으나 곧 분단된 한반도. 개성에서 사랑에 빠진 한 쌍의 젊은이가 한국전쟁 와중에 헤어지고 다시 만난다는 줄거리를 지닌 이 영화를 연출한 이는, 프랑스 배우 겸 감독 장 클로드 보나르도다. 1958년, 그는 영화감독 크리스 마커, 클로드 란츠만, 극작가 아르망 가티 등과 함께 북한에 초청된다. 보나르도와 가티는 여행 중 단편영화를 찍을 요량이었으나, 촬영 장비와 배우 등을 북한 정부가 지원하면서 장편을 만들게 된다. 영화 속 한국전쟁 묘사 등을 이유로 1959년 프랑스 정부가 영화 개봉을 금지했다가 1963년 해금했지만, 2010년까지 잊혀진 채 아카이브 창고에 묻혀 있었다.

This love story takes place at the beginning of the Korean war in the city of Kaesong between a young worker and the daughter of a traditional musician. Moranbong, une aventure coreenne is intriguing and extraordinary as much for its form as for the story of its production. The film was almost made by accident. The director Bonnardot and the writer Gatti joined a delegation of journalists and artists which included Chris Marker and Claude Lanzmann, who were invited to North Korea in the spring of 1958, only five years after the end of the Korean War. Their initial plan was to make a short film during their trip, but they changed their plan and decided to make a feature film with the full support of the local authorities.
