울리 에델의 <크리스티아네 F.: 우리는 초역의 아이들>과 제리 샤츠버그의 <백색공포>는 각각 1970년대 서베를린과 뉴욕의 거리를 배경으로, 젊은 여성들이 매력적이지만 헤로인에 중독된 남자에게 끌려 그의 세계에 휘말리는 이야기를 그린다. 에델과 샤츠버그 감독은 헤로인 중독을 둘러싼 문화와 그 파괴적인 현실을 거침없이 묘사하며 중독이 어떻게 우리를 잠식해가는지를 치밀하게 보여준다. 특히 주연 배우들의 압도적인 연기가 작품의 정서를 깊이 있게 완성한다. <크리스티아네 F.>에서는 열세 살의 나탸 브룬크호르스트와 열네 살의 토마스 하우슈타인이 비극적인 연인으로 출연하고, <백색공포>에서는 칸 영화제 여우주연상을 수상한 키티 윈과 첫 주연을 맡은 알 파치노의 열연이 돋보인다. 결과적으로 두 작품은 중독이 인간의 삶과 젊은 사랑의 순수함을 어떻게 파괴하는지를 처절하게 보여주는 잔혹하면서도 애틋한 초상으로 남는다.

For our final Double Feature of 2025, we look back at two tragic love stories born amid the streets of drug addiction.

Uli Edel's Christiane F. and Jerry Schatzberg's The Panic in Needle Park unfold in the 1970s on the streets of West Berlin and New York City, respectively. In each, a young woman falls for a handsome, charismatic drug addict and becomes entangled in his habit. Directors Edel and Schatzberg each take great care to depict the culture and rituals surrounding heroin addiction with unflinching authenticity. The films are also anchored by devastating performances from its lead performers: Christiane F. features thirteen-year-old Natja Brunckhorst and fourteen-year-old Thomas Haustein as the star-crossed lovers, while The Panic in Needle Park stars Kitty Winn, whose performance won the Best Actress award at Cannes, and Al Pacino in his first leading role. The result is a pair of haunting portraits that expose the human cost of addiction and the tragic ways it can corrode the purity of young love.
