줄거리

괴테의 고전적인 원작 <파우스트>를 무르나우 감독이 영화화했다. 메피스토(에밀 야닝스)의 유혹에 빠진 노(老)학자 파우스트(괴스타 에크만)의 이야기이다. 메피스토는 인간을 신의 길로 인도하려는 대천사 가브리엘(베르너 퓌터러)과 언쟁을 벌인다. 에밀 야닝스는 이 작품에서 ‘메피스토펠레스’ 역을 맡아 신들린 듯한 연기를 보여주고 있다.

F.W. Murnau directed this film adapted with Faust: A German Folk Legend, the original work by Goethe. This film is about an old scholar named Faust (Gösta Ekman) who falls into temptation by Mephisto (Emil Jannings). Mephisto has a dispute with Archangel Gabriel (Werner Fuetterer) who leads people to the way to God. Emil Jannings plays Mephisto in this film with his enthusiastic acting.
