육신(肉身)의 길에서 만난 두 배우

The way of all flesh. 살이 붙어있는 살아있는 모든 것들은 같은 길을 가게 된다. 배우의 삶, 스타의 삶도 그렇다. 한 시대를 거머쥐고 모든 이의 시선을 받던 이가 어느덧 조금씩 시야 밖으로 밀려나다가 마침내 잊혀지고 만다는 진부하다면 진부한 ‘스타의 생애’는 땅 위의 모든 육신의 길을 압축적이고도 급격하게 보여주고 있는 것 같다. 여기 소개하는 두 배우, 에밀 야닝스(Emil Jannings, 1884~1950)와 김승호(1918~1968)도 그런 길을 걸었다. 눈부시게 높은 지위까지 치솟았던 두 사람의 명예는 변모한 세상의 흐름 속에서 어느새 덧없는 옛이야기처럼 되었다. 그리고 그 길에서 두 배우는 만난다. <육체의 길(The way of all flesh)>(1927, 1959, 1967). 한 시대를 풍미했던 두 스타 배우가 삶의 갈림길 앞에서 마주했던 이정표 같은 영화들이다. 두 배우가 같은 역할로 출연한 이 작품에서 시작된 이번 기획전은 그간 국내에 잘 소개되지 않았던 1930~40년대 독일영화들이 포함된 에밀 야닝스의 대표작 여덟 편과 김승호의 대표작 일곱 편을 상영한다. 이를 통해 두 배우가 걸었던 배우로서의 삶, 그리고 그 속에서 드러나는 두 나라의 곡절 깊은 현대사를 반추해본다.

Two Actors To Encounter on the Way of the Flesh

All the live with the flesh walk through the same way. The life of actors and stars are the same. ‘Life of a Star’ might be a cliché that an actor who has attracted public gaze at one time gradually comes to disappear and become forgotten, which shows a short version of the life of all the flesh.
These two actors, Emil Jannings (1884~1950) and Seung-Ho Kim (1918~1968) also walked through the similar life. Their honor in high social positions now became an old transient story in the time current of changed world. The two actors encounter on the way of All Flesh (1927, 1959 and 1967). These films mean a milestone which the dominant two actors of the times confronted at a crossroad of their lives. This retrospective was initiated from these films that the two actors played the same role. It will screen 8 films of Emil Jannings including German films in the 1930s and 40s which we could hardly watch in Korea, as well as 7 films of Seung-Ho Kim.
With these films, we could reflect their lives of actors in which the complications of the modern history in two countries are revealed.
